Legitimate Work From Home Opportunity: What You Need to Know About MTurk

Some of the HITs, which you can think of as small jobs, pay only pennies.

Despite the low pay, people are drawn to MTurk because of its flexibility. Most other remote jobs require a set schedule that may not be convenient for stay-at-home parents, college students, busy retirees and people in between jobs.

MTurk doesn’t place any of those restrictions on its workers — you can accept HITs 10 minutes a week or 10 hours a week.

I’ve used MTurk on and off for the past three years and can confirm that it’s not a scam! Earnings are transferred to your bank account or can be redeemed for an Amazon.com gift card.

How much money can you really make with MTurk? I spent three hours doing three different types of HITs to find out!

Is Amazon MTurk a Scam or Legit? Let’s See Our MTurk Review

Truly speaking, this option cannot become your primary source of income. It is totally your extra gig that could help you in solving a few bills.

Quality time you can invest in earning could be during TV commercials or browsing time or anything else. You should be patient enough to find actual work and cross your probationary period.

There are many people who have shared their views about MTurk. They shall share all the tricks and tips that will turn helpful to you.

This website has the most positive reviews everywhere. It is rated 3.5/5 stars on the Trustpilot website and 4/5 stars on the G2 website.

The alpha-Turker

When Mike Naab first learned of MTurk, he “thought it was too good to be true.”

The prospect of stringing together any kind of side income by completing low-paying tasks — $0.05 here, $0.20 there — seemed unrealistic. And for some time, it was: In his first few weeks on the platform, he pulled in less than $2/hour.

Then, he discovered a bustling online metropolis of hardcore Turkers.

They posted in forums with names like MTurk Crowd and Turkernation. They built software tools that automatically alerted them of well-paying HITs with a chirp or chime. They installed browser extensions that tracked hourly rates and optimized workflow.

“I started to learn more about how things worked,” says Naab. “And that’s when the switch really flipped.”

Since 2013, Naab has completed 95k HITs and earned $45k working part-time on MTurk. In a typical 30-day period, he completes around 4k HITs (many of which take just a few seconds) and pulls in $1k.

What 30 days of work part-time on MTurk looks like for Mike Naab, a business consultant from Pennsylvania (The Hustle)

To be sure, this isn’t a big-money side hustle — and he still has to pay taxes on this. But it’s a meaningful supplement to Naab’s daily income.

It’s also relatively passive. Naab Turks during short gaps in his day: A 30-minute lunch break may mean a few $1.25 Stanford studies. A 10-minute lull between meetings is a $2 psychological survey on chocolate. A 30-second stretch could net him $0.08 for a 1-question poll on the effectiveness of candle scents.

“Most of it is just filling in empty in the day — time I’d probably be wasting otherwise,” he says. “If you’re not doing anything anyway, it’s just bonus money.”

One downside of this logic is that it promotes a constant, break-less cycle of work. To maintain a decent wage, Naab must be constantly alert, always tuned in, and willing to spring to action at the “ding!” of a $0.50 HIT.

Another downside is the uneven flow of the work. Some days, Naab might make $50 in a few hours; other days, he’ll only pull in a few bucks.

“I look at it from an hourly rate standpoint, rather than what I make total,” he says. “If a HIT takes 15 minutes and pays $3, that’s a $12 pay rate, which isn’t bad.”

Naab has to constantly run time assessments in his head: A task that pays $0.25 for 1 minute ($15/hr) is better than a task that pays $1 and takes 10 minutes ($6/hr). Anything that pays out at an hourly rate of less than $6 is “sucky.”

Naab’s HITs often work out to a reasonable hourly rate (The Hustle)

In his book, Side Hustle From Home: How To Make Money Online With Amazon Mechanical Turk, Naab enumerates on the many tools and resources he uses:

  • Turkopticon: A site where Turkers rate requesters’ communication, generosity, fairness, and promptness on a scale from 1-5. (Used to filter out or avoid bad actors who populate MTurk.)
  • Turkmaster: A browser extension that finds HITs based on criteria, including pay, and pushes them to you. (Saves time spent looking for tasks, and increases the amount made.)
  • Mmmturkeybacon: An extension that tallies projected earnings for the day.
  • MTurk Crowd, HITs Worth Looking For,  MTurkForum: Forums where Turkers give out tips, compile quality HITs, and discuss bad requesters.

“Most people’s first mistake is they go on there and accept any task they see,” says Naab. “They’ll do these transcriptions — $0.01 to transcribe a whole receipt for Expensify. That’s a terrible ROI.”

Naab prefers surveys, which generally pay $1 or more and don’t require much time. Other tasks require “qualifications” (anything from age/location, to a certain number of completed HITs, to experience with psychological trauma).

A receipt transcription task on MTurk (The Hustle)

But even for a top 1% Turker like Naab, the good stuff has been drying up lately.

“Either there’s not as much work, or there are more workers now,” he says. “It’s harder to catch the good ones, and it’s definitely not as good as it was at its peak.”

The platform, it seems, has grown in popularity — especially among workers in India, where the pay rates are more favorable. Once underground enclaves, the MTurk forums now court thousands of posters from around the world.

Key Amazon Mechanical Turk Concepts:

Requester.

A Requester is a company, organization, or person that creates and submits tasks (HITs) to Amazon Mechanical Turk for Workers to perform. As a Requester, you can use a software application to interact with Amazon Mechanical Turk to submit tasks, retrieve results, and perform other automated tasks. You can use the Requester website to check the status of your HITs and manage your account.

What is an Amazon Mechanical Turk HIT?

A Human Intelligence Task aka (HIT) is a task that a Requester submits to Amazon Mechanical Turk for Workers to perform. A HIT represents a single, self-contained task. Workers can find HITs listed on the Amazon Mechanical Turk website. For more information, go to the Amazon Mechanical Turk website. Each HIT has a lifetime, specified by the Requester, that determines how long the HIT is available to Workers. A HIT also has an assignment duration, which is the amount of time a Worker has to complete a HIT after accepting it.

Worker.

A Worker is a person who performs the tasks specified by a Requester in a HIT. Workers use the Amazon Mechanical Turk website to find and accept assignments, enter values into the question form, and submit the results. The Requester specifies how many Workers can work on a task. Amazon Mechanical Turkguarantees that a Worker can work on each task only one time.

Assignment.

An assignment specifies how many people can submit completed work for your HIT. When a Worker accepts a HIT, Amazon Mechanical Turk creates an assignment to track the work to completion. The assignment belongs exclusively to the Worker and guarantees that the Worker can submit results and be eligible for a reward until the time the HIT or assignment expires.

Criticism

Because HITs are typically simple, repetitive tasks and users are paid often only a few cents to complete them, some have criticized Mechanical Turk as a «virtual sweatshop». At the same time, workers set their own hours and are not under any obligation to accept any work they do not wish to do. Because workers are paid as contractors rather than employees, requesters do not have to file forms for, nor to pay, payroll taxes, and they avoid laws regarding minimum wage, overtime, and workers compensation. Workers, though, must report their income as self-employment income. In addition, some requesters have taken advantage of workers by having them do the tasks, then rejecting their submission in order to avoid paying. However, at least some workers on Mechanical Turk are people who are middle class and do the work for fun. Quality of the entries can vary from usable to useless.

Amazon.com does not monitor the service and refers all complaints to the poster of the HIT.

Key features

Get started quickly using MTurk with the AWS SDK

MTurk offers access to a virtual community of Workers that are available to help you accomplish your business goals. AWS Software Development Kit (SDK) supports the MTurk Requester API, so you can simplify using MTurk in your applications with an API tailored to your programming language or platform of choice. The robust set of AWS tools enable you to programmatically distribute tasks that require human intelligence to a widely distributed, on-demand workforce.

Flexible Requester UI for task creation and management

You can create and submit virtually any task that can be completed using a computing device connected to the Internet. The Requester site provides a large set of sample templates that make it easy to get started creating HITs for Workers to complete. MTurk templates are defined using HTML/JS/CSS and can be readily modified. You can easily create your own template by modifying a template, or start from a blank template. Researchers can also post a survey on MTurk that is hosted on another service such as Qualtrics or SurveyMonkey, or other survey tools they may be more familiar with.

Easily create multiple HITs in the Requester UI

The MTurk Requester UI enables Requesters to create and publish HITs — either one at a time or in a batch — without writing code. Publishing HITs in a batch from the UI can save significant time when a Requester is looking to process many HITs of the same type. For instance, instead of creating one HIT asking one Worker to find the primary websites for 1000 companies, you could publish 1000 HITs using the same HIT design by uploading each company’s data in a CSV (comma-separated values) file. Using the CSV file, MTurk will automatically create a separate HIT for every company included in your file, enabling multiple Workers to work on your HITs at the same time.

Manage and qualify workers

Qualifications offer a power mechanism for Requesters to have fine grain control over which Workers are allowed to view and work on your tasks. You can create your own custom Qualification Types, or use the ones supplied by MTurk to qualify and manage your workforce.

Efficient structure

Turn fixed costs into variable costs; the overhead and fixed costs associated with hiring and managing a temporary workforce can often be significant. By leveraging the skills of on-demand Workers from around the world, you can significantly lower costs by paying only for what you use. The price you (the Requester) pay for a Human Intelligence Task («HIT») is comprised of two components: the amount you pay Workers, plus a fee you pay Amazon Mechanical Turk (MTurk) which is based on the amount you pay Workers.

Pros And Cons

This section truly helps you to take a wiser decision, right? Let’s look at the good and bad sides of the MTurk.

Pros

  • Flexible work hours and work schedule, as you can operate this from any corner of the world.
  • It is both a part-time and full-time opportunity, so you can earn accordingly.
  • Payments and payouts are simple and easy as promised.
  • Easy tasks and mostly are micro-tasks, that will help you in regaining your interest.
  • They have a private helpful team as customer support.
  • Amazon Mechanical Turk has an uncomplicated interface.

Cons

  • Only Indians and US citizens are paid in cash.
  • Other citizenship holders are paid in points only, which can be redeemed as Gift Cards.
  • Most of the tasks are literally paid in a few cents.
  • You will find requestors offering very little for the work. At times they even reject your work after submission.
  • The repetition of work sometimes leads to loose interest.
  • Promotions are slow and expectancy never soothes up.

A Very Mixed Bag

I began working on Amazon MTurk when I was in college and have been going there every now and again ever since graduating. Once you get into the flow of things, complete your first 1,000 tasks (or hits), and keep your approval score up (99.5% or higher), you’ll start to get more, better-paying hits. The thing to look out for is contractors who will either scam you out of your work by claiming you did it incorrectly, even though you followed all their instructions to the letter, or those who will just simply disappear into the night. At least in those cases, MTurk will reimburse you for the work you’ve done, but you do have to wait 30 days before that happens. I would suggest looking online for MTurk worker threads so you can stay up-to-date on which contractors to accept work from and those to avoid.

Amazon Turk: Pros and Cons

Pros

  • Work from the comfort of your home on your  own schedule
  • It is a flexible opportunity as you can work all day or whenever it is convenient for you.
  • Thousands of HITs available to earn extra cash daily
  • 100% online tasks
  • You can choose to get paid every day
  • You can transfer earnings to a bank account or redeem earnings for Amazon gift cards
  • There are no minimum threshold amount to hit before you can cash out

Cons

  • Pay can be very low
  • Some higher-paying tasks require some qualifications
  • Some HITs are boring and tedious
  • Higher-paying HITs can get snapped up quickly
  • If the Requester rejects your work, you do not get paid for your work

In Conclusion

Amazon Turk is a great work from home opportunity if you want to make extra cash in your spare time. If you are at least 18-year-old, you can sign up here as a Worker on the Amazon MTurk platform to start making money today.

Working on HITs

How do I complete a HIT?

To work on a HIT, sign in to the Worker website and visit the HITs page. There you will see a list of HITs you are qualified to work on. Click on the «Accept & Work» button for the HIT you want to work on. Complete the HIT according to the Requester instructions, and click the «Submit HIT» button. After you submit your results for the HIT, another similar HIT will be presented for you to accept.

How do HITs get approved?

Requesters determine whether to approve your work and pay you within 30 days after you submit your Human Intelligence Tasks (HITs). Amazon Mechanical Turk does not determine whether or when to approve or reject HITs and does not estimate when your HITs will be approved. Completing HITs accurately will help ensure that Requesters will want you to continue to work for them. Read instructions thoroughly, answer HITs accurately, and return HITs you are unable to complete correctly, to build a positive reputation as a Worker. Keep in mind that returned HITs will not affect your rating.

In the event you have questions about the content of a HIT or the approval status, you can

How much time do I have to work on a HIT?

Requesters can specify a HIT’s «Allotted Time» or how long a Worker can hold on to a HIT. Once the Worker accepts the HIT, a timer begins counting up to the HIT’s allotted time. This timer is visible to the Worker on the Worker web site. When the timer reaches the HIT’s allotted time, the HIT is made available for other Workers to accept and work on. This ensures that work is completed in a reasonable time period.

Why is the number of HITs I can do each day limited?

Amazon Mechanical Turk limits the number of HITs Workers can do on a daily basis as a means of combating conduct that would violate the Participation Agreement, including, for example, use of robots, scripts or other automated methods to complete HITs and ensuring that Workers are exercising their independent, human judgement to complete HITs.

My work was rejected, what can I do?

A Requester may reject your work if they believe the answer is wrong, the HIT was not completed correctly, or that the instructions were not followed. If you believe that your work was rejected in error, you may decide to contact the Requester directly.

You can reach out to a Requester by following these steps:
  1. Go to the HITs page on the Worker website and search for HITs containing the Requester’s name.
  2. Click on the title of the HIT in question.
  3. On the lower right-hand side of the box, click Contact the Requester of this HIT.
  4. Enter your question about the HIT and submit.

How can I use the HIT content that Requesters publish?

You may only use the HIT content that Requesters publish to perform the HIT. Do not share the HIT content (or your answer) with anyone except the Requester, or with MTurk to report abuse.

How do I report a HIT that violates the Amazon Mechanical Turk policies?

If you see a HIT that violates the Amazon Mechanical Turk Participation Agreement including the Acceptable Use Policy, please report the HIT by clicking on the «Report this HIT» link so that we can investigate.

When you complete HITs on Amazon Mechanical Turk, you are accessing the Internet to perform work for Requesters that may not be Amazon. We recommend that you secure your computer with the latest operating system security updates and virus protection software, update your browser and plug-ins with the latest versions, and use caution when directed to other websites or asked to download software.

Premium Qualifications

How can I participate in the Premium Qualifications feature?

Requesters use Premium Qualifications to access the contributions of those Workers that are best-suited to their workloads. To become eligible to complete HITs that use Premium Qualifications, Workers can complete Profile Information HITs available here. Please note that some Premium Qualifications are only available for Workers in certain locations.

Do I have to complete the Profile Information HITs?

No. Providing information via Profile Information HITs is optional. You can complete as many or as few Profile Information HITs as you choose. Certain HITs are only available to Workers who have completed certain Profile Information HITs.

Where can I view the Profile information HITs I have submitted?

Once your Profile Information HITs have been processed, which may take up to 30 days, you can view your related Premium Qualifications on the Qualifications Assigned to You tab.

How can I change or have my Premium Qualifications removed?

Amazon Mechanical Turk will re-publish the Profile Information HITs on a periodic basis. Workers can be granted new Premium Qualifications by changing their responses when re-taking Profile Information HITs. If you want to remove any of your Premium Qualifications at any time, please and we will remove you from that Premium Qualification.

How does Amazon Mechanical Turk use my Profile Information HITs?

We use your Profile Information HIT responses to associate Premium Qualifications with your Worker ID, so that Requester HITs requiring those Premium Qualifications can be made available to you. We will not otherwise use this information for any purpose (including marketing purposes) without your consent. You can contact us at any time to opt-out of Premium Qualifications and revoke your consent for us to use the profile information you provided. To learn more about our information practices, please read our Privacy Notice.

Payments & Fees

How do I purchase prepaid HITs on Amazon Mechanical Turk?

Follow these steps to purchase prepaid HITs:
  1. From your Amazon Mechanical Turk account, go to My Account -> Purchase Prepaid HITs.
  2. Enter in the amount you would like to purchase.
  3. Select the credit or debit card on file or enter in new credit or debit card information.
  4. Confirm your purchase.

Note: As a US Requester, you may be prompted to establish a verified Amazon Payments account if you plan to make a purchase above certain amounts. You can create a verified Amazon Payments account at any time here.

What rounding rules are applied when calculating fees?

After the fee is calculated, we round half up amounts greater than $0.01 – we round down if the fractional amount is less than half a penny, and round up otherwise. For example, $0.104 is rounded to $0.10, $0.105 is rounded to $0.11, and $0.108 is rounded to $0.11.

How are Workers paid?

Workers will be paid and Amazon Mechanical Turk (MTurk) fees will be charged when you approve submitted work. If you reject the work, the Worker is not paid and you are not charged the MTurk fees. MTurk Prepaid HITs are subject to Participation Agreement. You can review MTurk pricing here.

How do I receive a refund for prepaid HITs?

If you would like a refund of your prepaid HIT purchase, please .

Refunds are processed to the original payment method used to prepay the account. You can find this information on the My Account page.

  • When requesting a refund, provide the refund amount and the payment method used when you .
  • If there is on the account, we are not able to process a refund. The amount held in Liability is visible on the My Account page.
  • Refunds are issued for the full amount of the available balance on any given transaction.

Who are Amazon Mechanical Turk Masters?

Amazon Mechanical Turk (MTurk) has built technology which analyzes Worker performance, identifies high performing Workers, and monitors their performance over time. Workers who have demonstrated excellence across a wide range of HITs are awarded the Masters Qualification. Masters must continue to pass our statistical monitoring to maintain the MTurk Masters Qualification.

Do you collect tax reporting information from non-US based Workers?

Yes, all non-U.S. based Workers are required to provide their tax information through a tax information interview before doing any work on Mechanical Turk just as U.S. Workers are required to do. The tax information interview collects the U.S. tax status (for U.S. person or non-U.S. person), the name, and the permanent residence address of the individual that will report the income on an income tax return.

What are funds held for liability?

Funds held for liability is the sum of your assignment liability and fee liability.

Funds held for assignment liability is an estimated amount representing how much you would have to pay Workers if Workers submitted results for every assignment you are requesting, and you approved all of the results. We hold these funds because we need to ensure that Workers are paid promptly for their work on Amazon Mechanical Turk (MTurk). Your assignment liability will increase as you create new HITs and will decrease as you approve or reject assignments. If you have no outstanding assignments, you will have zero assignment liability.

Funds held for fee liability is an estimated amount representing how much you would have to pay MTurk if Workers submitted results for every assignment you are requesting, and you approved all of the results. Your fee liability will increase as you create new HITs and will decrease as you approve or reject assignments. If you have no outstanding assignments, you will have zero fee liability.
